Southampton Photonics (SPI) was set up at the peak of the telecoms boom in the year 2000, the perfect time to take advantage of the optical communications expertise concentrated in Southampton University's Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC). The future looked bright, or so it seemed.

In the middle of 2001 disaster struck and the telecoms market crashed in a most spectacular manner, SPI had to urgently rethink their strategy or face going under with the rest.

"For all practical purposes we're launching a new company," admitted Stuart Woods, SPI's director of business development.

Our job at DVA has been to record and promote the newborn image of SPI in a short film which showcased their exclusive and patented machinery at the recent LASER 2003 exhibition in Germany. Here SPI introduced a fibre laser with an output of 600W, which they believe to be the highest power (with a single fibre gain module) reported to date. With the SPI’s incredible $10m fibreproduction facility in Southampton as a stage, the DVA camera crew were able to capture some of the awesome power of fibre optic production, so emphasised by the sheer fragility of the product. The visual impact of the stages of fibre optic production gave us some beautiful imagery to play.

“Our launch of the company and new range of products at the exhibition in Munich was very successful … Thanks again. I'm sure we'll be back!” E mail from Christine Skellon, Marketing Communications, SPI (Southampton Photonics) to DVA.
