TV commercials
A Quote had previously used a robot character in television commercials produced by DVA some 4 years ago. This time, more of the creative process was handed over to us. We believed we could make the robot a far more effective tool for the client in all manner of promotions, and so we decided to develop the robot as a character.
He became Robert A. Quote, a mechanical everyman who experiences the same trials organising his insurance cover as everyone, rather than suffering the slapstick accidents that had been the theme of the earlier work. This meant producing a much more complex model to allow the character animation we planned.
Three scenarios were developed into working scripts and storyboards, each a familiar scene – but with a twist. The first 30 second commercial, and the 10 second piece were set on the driveway of Robert’s suburban home as he polishes his car. The second was a dream sequence and the third a car journey. We developed a world for Robert styled to be deliberately ‘retro’ to accommodate the existing A Quote branding. The end result is more ‘Terry and June’ than ‘Star Wars’, which is where the humour of the piece lies.
