3com Network Setup Tool

3Com needed a tool to educate SMEs needing to set up a small network. The objective was to improve support to customers buying entry level hubs. 3Com were spending significant sums on hotline support in marketing their network services and needed a tool to act as fulfilment and marketing information.

The Strategy

The approach was to create an easy to follow manual in electronic form – an interactive CD-ROM to be shipped with the products, which could be run on the computer while it was being set up for networking. It would be web-based, so it could be opened in a browser, scaled and minimised as the user wished.

As well as a general background to networking, the tool would give stepby- step information on setting up computers and other hardware. It would also include a powerful troubleshooting guide and advice on using your network effectively.

We brainstormed the idea further with 3Com during a dynamic creative process to fine-tune the content. The tool also had to be created in five languages.

The Results

Millions of copies of the CD-ROM have been distributed, saving huge sums on hotline support and acting as a powerful marketing tool at the same time. “As well as reducing the level of calls to our hotline support desk, DVA has helped us create the feel good factor with customers and we’ve truly differentiated ourselves from our competitors – we are perceived as the company that provides the total product solution” – 3Com project leader
